Reception next week

Phonics
Now that we have learnt all our initial letter sounds a-z we will be writing words that start with the same sounds and seeing how many words the children can write. If you would like to try this at home, give your child a word or use a picture e.g. sun. They can write the word by sounding it out. How many other words can they think of that start with 's' sound? Can they write them down themselves by sounding them out? e.g. sit, sat, sam, sad, sap. Give a sticker for each word they can think of.
We are also going to learn about rhyming words, so for example what words can they think of that rhyme with jam? Even  if they are nonsense words to help children understand that words that rhyme have the same ending. e.g. jam, ham, dam, tam, ram, bam.

Numeracy
We will be using the + and = signs again as well as introducing the skill of estimation using pegs/cubes. You can try this game at home. Grab a handful of objects and estimate how many you think there are, write down your guess. Then count out the objects - lining them up to avoid counting any objects twice, write down your total. How close was your estimate? The more children practice these the more accurate their estimations will become as they come to realise what numbers look like when represented by objects. Don't worry if at first your child is estimating 100 when there are only 10 objects. By allowing them to count and find out if they were correct will help their misconception.

Reading Books
They will be changed on Monday so please leave comments if you have listened to your child read. If you haven't finished the book, leave a comment and we wont change their book just yet. We will also be sending home List 3 words to learn at home.

Nursery

We really enjoyed the stay and play sessions last week. I hope you enjoyed yourselves and you gained an insight into some of the fantastic things your children do in Nursery.
On Friday afternoon we went on a nature walk again to look at the changes in our environment. We enjoyed the mud!!

Phonics

We continued with instrumental sounds. The children were experiencing and developing an awareness of sounds made with instruments and noise makers. We also listened to the difference between sounds made with instruments.

Here are two activities you could do at home to support your child's learning:

Talking about sounds made by instruments
Visit the local library
Visit your local library and ask the librarian if they have the following books:
·The old lady that swallowed a fly
·The three Billy Goats Gruff
·What’s the time Mr Wolf?
·The Very Noisy Night
·The Animal Boogie
·Non fiction books about musical instruments

Finding objects that make a noise
Get your child to look indoors and outdoors for objects that make a noise. You could make a list together or they could collect them in a carrier bag or basket.
You could take pictures of these on a mobile or digital camera and print them. This will help your child to talk about the sounds they have heard.

Look, listen and note if your child can:
choose the right  words to describe the sounds they hear (e.g. loud,   fierce, rough,
squeaky, etc)
  • talk about what they think about the sounds have heard

Maths

We have been learning the numerals 2 and 3. Please look at Mrs Foster's post earlier on in the year for the rhymes that help the children with formation.
0 and 9 this week!

Reception Phonics w/c 19/11/12

I hope everyone has had a lovely weekend after our Stay and Play week :-) All the children thoroughly enjoyed having parents come to school as did the teachers. I hope you managed to get a good look round and see all the fun things your children get to do at school. Any questions/suggestions/ideas please feel free to leave a comment on the blog for us.

PHONICS
Next week in phonics we are continuing with our segmenting and blending skills to help children become confident readers and writers. We will be looking at pictures and trying to write down the word for them by segmenting the sounds we can hear. We will also be reading words and matching them with pictures to practice our comprehension skills. If you would like to try any of these ideas at home it will strengthen your child's understanding and help them with their reading and writing skills.
We will also be learning our final alphabet letter sound - Z. There will be a new song and action for the children to learn.

READING BOOKS
Please leave comments in the green reading diary every time you hear your child read so we know they have read and finished their book at home. We aim to change reading books every Monday and Friday. Some children are struggling with character names still and also knowing who is who. Please practise these at home as much as you can. We don't look at the formation of capital letters yet in Reception so some children are struggling knowing what the sound is for B in Biff and D in dad etc. We also haven't learnt the /ch/ sound for Chip, so please just keep reminding them of who is who and use your list of character names so children will recognise them and be able to read them without needing to try and sound them out.

We will be sending home lists of words to practise reading as well each week (List 1 was given out last week). The more reading opportunities you can present to your child, the stronger they will become at reading. Magazines around the house, street signs, food labels, song lyrics etc. Reading to them is also a great way to strengthen their knowledge and understanding, this could be a book or even helping you gather ingredients from a recipe.

Thank you for all your continued support and enthusiasm :-D

Stay & Play in Reception

I would like to say a big thank you to all the parents who came to our first stay and play today. Everyone had a great time and the children especially enjoyed sharing their learning with you, having parents join in and showing you round the classrooms. A few have asked me if parents are going to be coming to school every day now :-)

PHONICS
In Reception this week we are learning new letters - v j w x so please practise these at home to reinforce learning.
We have been doing more blending and segmenting of words as well. If you would like to help your child at home with this you can segment any words to create "silly instructions" which the children enjoy. For example, "Please can you put your s-o-ck-s on. Pass me your c-u-p. Have you got your p-e-n. Time for b-e-d." (this works best with words that can be phonetically sounded out) This will help them to hear the individual sounds in words and will help with their writing skills.

NUMERACY
In numeracy we are still working on "one more and one less" But we are also moving onto "two more and two less." When they have got the hang of you could try it with numbers past 20. If you think your child is finding this difficult at home, concentrate on ordering numbers instead and then "jump" down your number line together to see which number comes next.

READING BOOKS
We have sent home a list of words to practise reading at home. Children can sound them out first if they need to, but please encourage them to always blend those sounds together to then form the actual word. We will be sending a new list of words each week so please make sure you look in their book bags regularly.

Thank you again for your support today and I look forward to seeing parents again tomorrow. Don't forget your waterproofs....  :-D

Dinner
Today we had the choice of;
Fish & chips
Jacket potato
Meat balls & pasta

Vegetarian option - Cheesy pasta bake.

Dessert;
Cake
Biscuit
Yoghurt
Fruit

Nursery

Welcome back to everyone. I hope you all had a lovely break. The children have been sharing some of the things they have been doing during their week away from school.
Coming back to school after a holiday can be a tricky time for some children but they have all done really well.

In maths we have revisited the numbers 1, 4 and 7. The children are really enjoying our 'Digit Dancing' and 'Digit Doodling'. We are continuing to count to 20 and the children are making great progress with this. We are also learning to count back from 10 to 0 which we are finding more tricky! The pom poms have arrived and we love counting with them!
We have been doing a new Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle called Pat-a-cake which the children have been brilliant at.
In Phonics we have moved on to Aspect 2 within Phase 1 of Letter & Sounds which is all about instrumental sounds. I hope that you have all had a try of the activities I have sent home. There will be more ideas to follow.

I am looking forward to the stay & play sessions coming up this week where you will be able to see for yourselves some of the activities I have mentioned. Hopefully this will make things a bit clearer for you!

Reception Numeracy w/c 5th Nov

Hope everybody has had a lovely half term/weekend. I'm looking forward to hearing all the children's news and stories.
For our first week back, Reception will be concentrating on the concept of "one more and one less" Children will be learning to find one more or one less from a group of up to 10 objects and also being able to say the number that is one more/one less from a given number.

We will be using objects to help represent the numbers so children can visualise what it means when we add one more or take one away as well as looking at number lines to help them. If you would like to practise these ideas at home this week it will help strengthen your child's understanding.

Children can count out objects at home, then ask them how many will they have if one more is added/if one is taken away. (Try using fruit/sweets to really engage them, as one less means they can eat one and one more means they can have extra!!)

See you all on Monday :-)
