Stay & Play in Reception

I would like to say a big thank you to all the parents who came to our first stay and play today. Everyone had a great time and the children especially enjoyed sharing their learning with you, having parents join in and showing you round the classrooms. A few have asked me if parents are going to be coming to school every day now :-)

PHONICS
In Reception this week we are learning new letters - v j w x so please practise these at home to reinforce learning.
We have been doing more blending and segmenting of words as well. If you would like to help your child at home with this you can segment any words to create "silly instructions" which the children enjoy. For example, "Please can you put your s-o-ck-s on. Pass me your c-u-p. Have you got your p-e-n. Time for b-e-d." (this works best with words that can be phonetically sounded out) This will help them to hear the individual sounds in words and will help with their writing skills.

NUMERACY
In numeracy we are still working on "one more and one less" But we are also moving onto "two more and two less." When they have got the hang of you could try it with numbers past 20. If you think your child is finding this difficult at home, concentrate on ordering numbers instead and then "jump" down your number line together to see which number comes next.

READING BOOKS
We have sent home a list of words to practise reading at home. Children can sound them out first if they need to, but please encourage them to always blend those sounds together to then form the actual word. We will be sending a new list of words each week so please make sure you look in their book bags regularly.

Thank you again for your support today and I look forward to seeing parents again tomorrow. Don't forget your waterproofs....  :-D
