Reception next week

Phonics
Now that we have learnt all our initial letter sounds a-z we will be writing words that start with the same sounds and seeing how many words the children can write. If you would like to try this at home, give your child a word or use a picture e.g. sun. They can write the word by sounding it out. How many other words can they think of that start with 's' sound? Can they write them down themselves by sounding them out? e.g. sit, sat, sam, sad, sap. Give a sticker for each word they can think of.
We are also going to learn about rhyming words, so for example what words can they think of that rhyme with jam? Even  if they are nonsense words to help children understand that words that rhyme have the same ending. e.g. jam, ham, dam, tam, ram, bam.

Numeracy
We will be using the + and = signs again as well as introducing the skill of estimation using pegs/cubes. You can try this game at home. Grab a handful of objects and estimate how many you think there are, write down your guess. Then count out the objects - lining them up to avoid counting any objects twice, write down your total. How close was your estimate? The more children practice these the more accurate their estimations will become as they come to realise what numbers look like when represented by objects. Don't worry if at first your child is estimating 100 when there are only 10 objects. By allowing them to count and find out if they were correct will help their misconception.

Reading Books
They will be changed on Monday so please leave comments if you have listened to your child read. If you haven't finished the book, leave a comment and we wont change their book just yet. We will also be sending home List 3 words to learn at home.
